China state broadcaster pulls La Liga matches following Mbappé joke
Why This Matters
This incident underscores China's consistent use of economic leverage and media control to police perceived foreign slights, even minor ones involving sports figures. It serves as a stark reminder for global sports leagues and entertainment companies of the precarious nature of operating in the vast but sensitive Chinese market, often requiring public apologies to regain access.
China Media Group, which acknowledged Mbappé's apology, has not said how long the blackout will last.
